Description:
Teicoplanin is a glycopeptide antibiotic primarily used to treat serious infections caused by Gram-positive bacteria, particularly those resistant to other antibiotics, such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). It is derived from the fermentation of the actinobacterium Actinoplanes teichomyceticus. Teicoplanin works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, specifically targeting the D-alanyl-D-alanine portion of the peptidoglycan precursor, which is crucial for bacterial cell wall integrity. This mechanism leads to cell lysis and death of the bacteria. Teicoplanin is typically administered intravenously or intramuscularly and has a long half-life, allowing for less frequent dosing. CAS:Teicoplanin is related to vancomycin and has similar effects against gram-positive bacteria and anaerobes, and usually requires less frequent administration than vancomycin, but it is less efficient against S. haemolyticus.
