5α-Androstane-3α,17α-diol

Description:
5α-Androstane-3α,17α-diol, also known as androstanediol, is a steroid hormone and a metabolite of testosterone. It is characterized by its structure, which includes a steroid backbone with hydroxyl groups at the 3α and 17α positions. This compound is typically found in the human body and is involved in various biological processes, including the regulation of androgenic activity. It exhibits weak androgenic properties compared to its parent compound, testosterone, and can influence the development of male secondary sexual characteristics. The substance is often studied for its potential roles in hormonal therapies and its effects on muscle growth and fat distribution. In terms of physical properties, it is generally a white to off-white crystalline solid, soluble in organic solvents, and has a relatively low melting point. As a chemical entity, it is important in both clinical and research settings, particularly in endocrinology and sports medicine. Its CAS number, 6165-21-5, is used for identification in chemical databases and regulatory contexts.

5'-Androstane-3',17'-diol (5-AD) is a neurosteroid that is synthesized from cholesterol. It is present in the brain, testes, and ovaries, where it plays an important role in regulating hormone levels. 5-AD has been shown to be involved in the development of the prostate gland and may also have antiseizure and antiepileptic effects. The enzyme dehydrogenase catalyzes the conversion of this compound to 5-androstene-3,17-dione (5-AND). The conversion of 5-AD to 5-AND is inhibited by the aromatase inhibitor letrozole. 5-AD can also be converted into estradiol by 17β hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1.
