:3,4-Dimethylbenzoic acid
Description:
3,4-Dimethylbenzoic acid, with the CAS number 619-04-5, is an aromatic carboxylic acid characterized by a benzene ring substituted with two methyl groups at the 3 and 4 positions, along with a carboxylic acid functional group (-COOH). This compound typically appears as a white crystalline solid and is known for its moderate solubility in water, while being more soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol and acetone. It has a melting point that is generally in the range of typical benzoic acids, indicating its solid state at room temperature. The presence of the carboxylic acid group imparts acidic properties, allowing it to participate in various chemical reactions, including esterification and acid-base reactions. 3,4-Dimethylbenzoic acid is utilized in organic synthesis and can serve as an intermediate in the production of dyes, fragrances, and pharmaceuticals. Its structural characteristics contribute to its reactivity and potential applications in various chemical processes.
