:N-Palmitoylsphingomyelin
Description:
N-Palmitoylsphingomyelin is a type of sphingolipid, specifically a phospholipid that plays a crucial role in cellular membranes, particularly in the myelin sheath surrounding nerve cells. It is characterized by a long-chain fatty acid, palmitic acid, which is attached to the sphingosine backbone, contributing to its structural integrity and function. This compound is amphipathic, possessing both hydrophilic (water-attracting) and hydrophobic (water-repelling) properties, which allows it to form bilayers in aqueous environments. N-Palmitoylsphingomyelin is involved in various biological processes, including cell signaling, membrane fluidity, and the formation of lipid rafts, which are microdomains that facilitate protein interactions. Its presence is particularly significant in the central nervous system, where it contributes to the stability and functionality of neuronal membranes. Additionally, alterations in sphingomyelin metabolism have been linked to various diseases, including neurodegenerative disorders, highlighting its importance in health and disease.

CAS:
N-Palmitoyl-D-sphingomyelin is a fatty acid that is derived from sphingomyelin. It has been shown to increase the water permeability of the cell membrane and alter the thermal expansion coefficient, which may be useful in diagnosis of cancer. In addition, N-palmitoyl-D-sphingomyelin has been shown to decrease cell viability and induce apoptosis in HL60 cells through electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) techniques. The phase transition temperature of N-palmitoyl-D-sphingomyelin has been found to be approximately 28°C. It also forms hydrogen bonds between its own molecules and other molecules due to ester linkages with cholesterol. This may be useful in natural compounds for treating metabolic disorders such as obesity or diabetes.
Formula:C39H79N2O6PPurity:Min. 95%Molecular weight:703.03 g/mol
