Methyl 5-bromo-2-oxopentanoate is a carbonyl compound that is used as an intermediate in organic synthesis. It can be used to make oxime, adduct, and attack compounds. Methyl 5-bromo-2-oxopentanoate reacts with hydroxylamine in the presence of acid to produce the corresponding oxime. In the presence of base, it reacts with proline to form an intramolecular acetylenedicarboxylate. This reaction takes place through a reductive elimination mechanism where hydrogenolysis is catalyzed by zinc metal or zinc chloride.
