CAS:Controlled ProductAndrostenedione is a hormone that plays an important role in the development and maintenance of male reproductive tissues. It is synthesized from DHEA by the enzyme 3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (3β-HSD). Androstenedione has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria in transfection experiments and polymerase chain reactions. Androstenedione also inhibits the activity of enzymes such as phosphofructokinase and pyruvate kinase, which are involved in glycolysis. The optimum concentration for this drug is dependent on the type of cell and tissue being treated. Androstenedione has been shown to have a matrix effect on certain types of cells, particularly those found in wastewater treatment systems. This drug also has inhibitory properties against dinucleotide phosphate, which may be responsible for its antitumor effects.
