It is a precursor of dopamine and has been shown to inhibit bacterial growth and decrease the production of p-hydroxybenzoic acid by inhibiting the enzyme tyrosinase. 3,4-Dihydroxy-DL-phenylalanine has also been shown to have antioxidant properties and may be useful in preventing neuronal death. 3,4-Dihydroxy-DL-phenylalanine has the ability to prevent oxidative stress by scavenging free radicals. The compound also inhibits lipid peroxidation induced by trifluoroacetic acid (TFA).
