CAS:Controlled ProductNorethynodrel is a progestin that is used in combination with other drugs to prevent pregnancy. It works by inhibiting ovulation, thickening cervical mucus to inhibit sperm penetration, and altering the uterine lining. This drug has been shown to have carcinogenic potential in animal models and can lead to myocardial infarcts. Norethynodrel binds competitively to the receptor site of estradiol benzoate or estradiol, preventing it from binding and activating the estrogen-dependent response. This mechanism of action also inhibits the enzyme activity of 17β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type II (17βHSD2) and reductase activity of 3βHSD, which are involved in hormone synthesis. The lack of these two enzymes leads to an accumulation of estrogens, which may contribute to carcinogenic effects.
