SPL-334 is a novel, potent, and selective inhibitor of the serine protease MMP-3. It is a potential drug candidate for the treatment of metabolic disorders, such as insulin resistance, obesity, and diabetes. SPL-334 blocks the nucleophilic attack by an activated water molecule on the peptide bond between two amino acids in a protein substrate. This reaction leads to cleavage of the peptide bond and subsequent termination of protein synthesis.
