Poly(oxy-1,2-ethanediyl), α-sulfo-ω-hydroxy-, C12-14-alkyl ethers, sodium salts

Description:
Poly(oxy-1,2-ethanediyl), α-sulfo-ω-hydroxy-, C12-14-alkyl ethers, sodium salts, commonly referred to as sodium laureth sulfate (SLES), is an anionic surfactant widely used in personal care and cleaning products. This compound is characterized by its ability to lower the surface tension of water, enhancing the wetting, emulsifying, and foaming properties of formulations. It is derived from the ethoxylation of fatty alcohols, specifically those with a carbon chain length of 12 to 14, which contributes to its effectiveness in cleansing and foaming. SLES is soluble in water and exhibits good biodegradability, making it a preferred choice in eco-friendly formulations. However, it can be irritating to the skin and eyes, particularly in high concentrations, which necessitates careful formulation and usage guidelines. Its mildness compared to other surfactants, combined with its excellent performance in various applications, has made it a staple ingredient in shampoos, body washes, and household cleaners.
