    <p>Trans-vaccenic acid is an unsaturated fatty acid that is found in milk fat. It has been shown to inhibit multiple enzymes and induce apoptosis in human colonic cells. Trans-vaccenic acid has been shown to inhibit the activity of three different enzymes, phospholipase A2, cyclooxygenase, and lipoxygenase, which are involved in the inflammatory bowel disease pathway. Trans-vaccenic acid also inhibits tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) production by lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-activated macrophages and decreases the expression of proinflammatory genes such as interleukin-1β. This anti-inflammatory effect may be due to trans-vaccenic acid's ability to inhibit fatty acid uptake into liver cells and decrease cellular inflammation.</p>
