The reaction of benzyl alcohol and o-toluic acid in dimethylformamide with a constant current of 8 amps produces a constant yield of racemic octahydro-2-benzofuran-1-one. Racemic octahydro-2-benzofuran-1-one can also be synthesized from toluene and perchlorate in anion exchange resin at room temperature. This reaction is conducted for 24 hours, and yields about 60% of the desired product.
