It is prepared by the reaction of sodium tanshinone with sulfonic acid, followed by purification using preparative high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). It inhibits mitochondrial membrane potential and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) activity, as well as DNA synthesis.
