:Potassium hydrogen peroxymonosulfate
Description:
Potassium hydrogen peroxymonosulfate, commonly known as potassium peroxymonosulfate or by its trade name, Oxone, is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula KHSO5. It is a white crystalline solid that is highly soluble in water, making it useful in various applications. This compound is known for its strong oxidizing properties, which arise from the presence of the peroxymonosulfate ion (HSO5^-). It is often used as a disinfectant, bleaching agent, and in water treatment processes due to its ability to effectively kill bacteria and other pathogens. Additionally, potassium hydrogen peroxymonosulfate is utilized in organic synthesis and as a reagent in analytical chemistry. It is generally considered stable under normal conditions but should be handled with care, as it can release oxygen and potentially cause combustion when in contact with organic materials. Safety precautions are necessary when working with this compound, including the use of personal protective equipment to avoid skin and eye contact.

CAS:
Oxone is a reactive oxygen species (ROS) that has an inhibitory effect on the growth of bacteria. It is used as a disinfectant or sterilant and is often used in wastewater treatment plants to remove organic contaminants such as naphthalene. The mechanism of action for Oxone involves its reaction with the electron-rich functional groups found on the bacterial cell membrane, which forms peroxides that cause irreversible damage to the cell. Oxone also reacts with DNA, RNA, and proteins, and is therefore toxic to all cells. Oxone has been shown to be effective against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, but it does not work well against acid-fast bacteria such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis or Mycobacterium avium complex.
Formula:KHSO5·KHSO4·K2SO4Color and Shape:White Off-White PowderMolecular weight:614.77 g/mol
