CAS 71-43-2
:Benzene
Description:
Benzene, with the CAS number 71-43-2, is a colorless, flammable liquid with a sweet odor, commonly associated with petroleum. It is an aromatic hydrocarbon, characterized by its stable ring structure composed of six carbon atoms, each bonded to one hydrogen atom, forming a planar, cyclic molecule. Benzene exhibits resonance, which contributes to its chemical stability and unique reactivity. It is non-polar and has a relatively low boiling point compared to other hydrocarbons, making it a volatile compound. Benzene is known for its ability to undergo electrophilic substitution reactions, which are typical for aromatic compounds, allowing it to form various derivatives. However, it is also recognized as a hazardous substance; prolonged exposure can lead to serious health risks, including carcinogenic effects. Due to its toxicity, the use of benzene is regulated in many countries, and safer alternatives are often sought in industrial applications. Its primary uses include serving as a solvent, a precursor in the synthesis of various chemicals, and in the production of plastics, resins, and synthetic fibers.
