Digitoxin

Description:
Digitoxin is a cardiac glycoside derived from the plant Digitalis purpurea, commonly known as foxglove. It is primarily used in the treatment of heart conditions, particularly in cases of heart failure and atrial fibrillation, due to its ability to increase the force of cardiac contractions and regulate heart rhythm. The chemical structure of digitoxin includes a steroid nucleus with a lactone ring and multiple sugar moieties, which contribute to its pharmacological properties. It is lipophilic, allowing it to cross cell membranes easily, and has a relatively long half-life, which necessitates careful monitoring of dosage to avoid toxicity. Common side effects include gastrointestinal disturbances, visual changes, and potential arrhythmias, particularly in cases of overdose. Digitoxin's mechanism of action involves the inhibition of the Na+/K+ ATPase pump, leading to increased intracellular calcium levels, which enhances cardiac contractility. Due to its narrow therapeutic index, digitoxin requires careful dosing and monitoring in clinical settings.
