:Felodipine
Description:
Felodipine is a dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker primarily used in the treatment of hypertension and angina pectoris. It functions by selectively inhibiting calcium ions from entering vascular smooth muscle and cardiac muscle during depolarization, leading to vasodilation and reduced blood pressure. Felodipine is characterized by its lipophilic nature, which enhances its absorption and bioavailability. The compound typically appears as a yellow crystalline solid and has a relatively long half-life, allowing for once-daily dosing. Its pharmacokinetics are influenced by factors such as food intake, which can affect its absorption. Felodipine is metabolized in the liver, primarily by cytochrome P450 enzymes, and its metabolites are excreted mainly through urine. Common side effects may include peripheral edema, headache, and flushing. Due to its mechanism of action, felodipine is effective in managing cardiovascular conditions, but it should be used with caution in patients with certain pre-existing conditions or those taking specific medications that may interact with its metabolism.
