:Phentolamine hydrochloride
Description:
Phentolamine hydrochloride is a non-selective alpha-adrenergic antagonist primarily used in the treatment of hypertension and to manage pheochromocytoma, a tumor of the adrenal gland that secretes catecholamines. It is a white to off-white crystalline powder that is soluble in water and has a pH range of 4.5 to 6.5 in solution. The compound acts by blocking alpha-1 and alpha-2 adrenergic receptors, leading to vasodilation and a decrease in blood pressure. Its chemical formula is C17H20N2•HCl, and it has a molecular weight of approximately 288.82 g/mol. Phentolamine is often administered via injection and can also be used in dental procedures to reverse the effects of local anesthetics. Side effects may include tachycardia, hypotension, and gastrointestinal disturbances. Due to its pharmacological properties, it is important to monitor patients closely during treatment to manage potential adverse effects effectively.
