CAS:4-(Methylthio)-3,5-xylenol is a synthetic chemical that has been shown to be an environmental pollutant. It is also used as a disinfectant in the form of dialkyl phosphates, which are known to cause allergic reactions and skin irritation. 4-(Methylthio)-3,5-xylenol has been found to act as an agonist of the α receptor, which plays a role in infectious diseases such as avian influenza, and is also an antagonist of the estrogen receptor. Exposure to 4-(methylthio)-3,5-xylenol can be through inhalation or ingestion of contaminated air or water sources such as plants like triticum aestivum (wheat) or human urine. This chemical can also be found in products with benzalkonium chloride.
