:Acetamide, N,N-bis(2-hydroxyethyl)-
Description:
Acetamide, N,N-bis(2-hydroxyethyl)-, also known as bis(2-hydroxyethyl)acetamide, is an organic compound characterized by its amide functional group and two hydroxyethyl substituents. It is a colorless to pale yellow liquid with a moderate viscosity and is soluble in water due to the presence of hydroxyl groups, which enhance its polarity. This compound exhibits properties typical of amides, including the ability to form hydrogen bonds, which contributes to its solubility and potential applications in various fields. It is often utilized in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, as a solvent, and in cosmetic formulations due to its moisturizing properties. The presence of the hydroxyethyl groups also imparts some degree of hydrophilicity, making it useful in formulations that require compatibility with aqueous systems. Safety data indicates that, like many amides, it should be handled with care, as it may cause irritation upon contact with skin or eyes. Overall, acetamide, N,N-bis(2-hydroxyethyl)- is a versatile compound with applications in both industrial and research settings.
