CAS 7440-09-7
:Potassium
Description:
Potassium, with the chemical symbol K and CAS number 7440-09-7, is an alkali metal that is highly reactive and essential for biological functions. It is characterized by its soft, silvery-white appearance and is one of the lightest metals, with a low density that allows it to be easily cut with a knife. Potassium has a melting point of approximately 63.5°C and a boiling point around 759°C. It readily reacts with water, producing potassium hydroxide and hydrogen gas, which can ignite due to the heat generated during the reaction. This metal is also known for its high electrical conductivity and is a vital nutrient in plant biology, playing a crucial role in cellular functions and osmoregulation. In its elemental form, potassium must be stored under oil or in an inert atmosphere to prevent oxidation and violent reactions with moisture. Its compounds, such as potassium chloride and potassium nitrate, are widely used in fertilizers, food processing, and various industrial applications.
