Rubidium

Description:
Rubidium is a soft, silvery-white metallic element belonging to the alkali metal group in the periodic table, with the atomic number 37. It is highly reactive, particularly with water, producing rubidium hydroxide and hydrogen gas, and it must be stored under oil or in an inert atmosphere to prevent oxidation. Rubidium has a relatively low melting point and boiling point compared to many other metals, and it exhibits a body-centered cubic crystal structure. It is known for its distinctive spectral lines, which are utilized in various applications, including atomic clocks and research in quantum mechanics. Rubidium compounds, such as rubidium chloride, are used in specialized applications, including fireworks and as a getter in vacuum tubes. Due to its reactivity, rubidium is not found in nature in its elemental form but occurs in trace amounts in minerals such as lepidolite and pollucite. Its isotopes, particularly rubidium-87, are of interest in geological dating and studies of the Earth's history.
