CAS 75-20-7
:Calcium carbide
Description:
Calcium carbide, with the chemical formula CaC₂ and CAS number 75-20-7, is a grayish-black solid that is primarily known for its use in the production of acetylene gas through hydrolysis. It is an ionic compound composed of calcium ions (Ca²⁺) and carbide ions (C₂²⁻). Calcium carbide is highly reactive, especially with water, producing acetylene and calcium hydroxide. This reaction is exothermic and can be hazardous if not controlled properly. The substance is also used in the manufacture of various chemicals, including calcium cyanamide, which serves as a fertilizer. In terms of physical properties, calcium carbide has a melting point of around 2160 °C and a density of approximately 2.22 g/cm³. It is important to handle calcium carbide with care, as it can react violently with moisture and is considered a hazardous material. Proper storage in a dry environment is essential to prevent unwanted reactions.
