:Sodium fusidate
Description:
Sodium fusidate is a sodium salt of fusidic acid, which is an antibiotic derived from the fungus Fusidium coccineum. It is primarily used for its antibacterial properties, particularly against Gram-positive bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus. Sodium fusidate is characterized by its ability to inhibit bacterial protein synthesis by interfering with the function of the ribosome, making it effective in treating skin infections, osteomyelitis, and other conditions caused by susceptible bacteria. The compound is typically administered in topical formulations or orally, depending on the infection being treated. It is known for its relatively low toxicity and good tolerability in patients. In terms of physical properties, sodium fusidate is a white to off-white powder that is soluble in water, which facilitates its use in various pharmaceutical preparations. However, like all antibiotics, its use should be guided by susceptibility testing to prevent the development of resistance.
