    <p>5-Ethenyl-2-pyrrolidinone is a versatile chemical that can be used in organic synthesis, as an intermediate in the production of carbapenems, and as a solvent. 5-Ethenyl-2-pyrrolidinone may have antibacterial activity against Gram negative bacteria and is resistant to spontaneous oxidation. The chemical has been found in human urine, but it is not known whether this compound originates from the human body or is a contaminant. The structure of 5-ethenyl-2-pyrrolidinone consists of two pyrrolidine rings with an ethylene bridge between them. It has been synthesized by reacting n-oxide of dimethylamine with 2 moles of acetaldehyde followed by acid hydrolysis and subsequent treatment with hydrogen peroxide and sodium hydroxide to form an ester.</p>
