CAS:Riluzole is a compound that inhibits glutamate release. It is used to treat amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Riluzole inhibits the release of glutamate, which is an important neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. This drug also has been shown to regulate the influx of calcium into cells, and may have anti-inflammatory properties. Riluzole binds to the alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methylisoxazole-4-propionic acid (AMPA) receptor and blocks ion channels that are activated by glutamate. In addition, it has been shown to inhibit the activity of caspase 3.
