CFC 114

Description:
CFC-114, also known as dichlorotetrafluoroethane, is a chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) with the chemical formula C2Cl2F4. It is a colorless, odorless gas at room temperature and is primarily used as a refrigerant and in aerosol propellants. CFC-114 is notable for its stability and low toxicity, which made it popular in various industrial applications. However, it is also a potent ozone-depleting substance, contributing to the depletion of the stratospheric ozone layer. Due to its environmental impact, the production and use of CFC-114 have been phased out in many countries under the Montreal Protocol. The substance has a relatively low boiling point, making it effective in refrigeration systems, but its long atmospheric lifetime raises concerns regarding its contribution to global warming and ozone layer depletion. As a result, alternatives with lower environmental impact are now favored in industrial applications.
