2,2'-Dihydroxy-4,4'-dimethoxybenzophenone-5,5'-disodiumsulfonate is a persulfate that absorbs UV radiation. It is used in sunscreens to protect the skin from ultraviolet light. This compound has been shown to be cytotoxic at high doses and has significant photoprotective effects at lower doses. 2,2'-Dihydroxy-4,4'-dimethoxybenzophenone-5,5'-disodiumsulfonate is also used as an absorber in water treatment and purification systems. It can stabilize solutions of sodium hydroxide and hydroxide solutions with sodium sulfamic acid or sulfamic acid. In addition it can be used to make lactams such as N-acetylcysteine by reacting with sodium hydroxide solution and sulfamic acid.
