:2-Fluoro-4-methylbenzoic acid
Description:
2-Fluoro-4-methylbenzoic acid is an aromatic carboxylic acid characterized by the presence of a fluorine atom and a methyl group on the benzene ring. Its molecular structure consists of a benzoic acid core, where the carboxylic acid (-COOH) functional group is attached to the aromatic ring. The fluorine atom is located at the second position, while the methyl group is at the fourth position relative to the carboxylic acid group. This compound typically exhibits properties such as being a solid at room temperature, with moderate solubility in polar solvents like water due to the presence of the carboxylic acid group. It may also display acidic behavior, capable of donating protons in solution. The presence of the fluorine atom can influence its reactivity and polarity, making it useful in various chemical syntheses and applications in pharmaceuticals or agrochemicals. Safety data should be consulted for handling, as with all chemical substances, to ensure proper precautions are taken.

CAS:
2-Fluoro-4-methylbenzoic acid is a fluorinated benzoic acid derivative that is used in the industrial production of bexarotene. 2-Fluoro-4-methylbenzoic acid can be synthesized from 2,4-dichlorobenzoic acid and chlorine or by diazotization with sodium nitrite and potassium nitrate. It has been investigated for use as an insecticide, but it is not currently registered for this use due to its high toxicity to mammals. The insecticidal activity of 2-fluoro-4-methylbenzoic acid may be due to inhibition of the synthesis of retinoid (vitamin A) in insects. The molecule also has nucleophilic properties that allow it to act as a substitute for carboxylate groups on proteins, making them unavailable for reactions catalyzed by enzymes such as aminopeptidase and protease.
Formula:C8H7FO2Purity:Min. 95%Molecular weight:154.14 g/mol
