:Levorphanol
Description:
Levorphanol is an opioid analgesic that is primarily used for the management of moderate to severe pain. It is a stereoisomer of the morphinan class of compounds and is known for its potent analgesic properties, which are comparable to those of morphine. Levorphanol acts primarily as a mu-opioid receptor agonist, but it also exhibits activity at kappa and delta opioid receptors, contributing to its analgesic effects. In addition to its analgesic properties, it has antitussive (cough suppressant) and sedative effects. Levorphanol has a relatively long half-life, which allows for less frequent dosing compared to some other opioids. It is typically administered orally or via injection. As with other opioids, there is a risk of dependence, tolerance, and potential for abuse, necessitating careful monitoring when prescribed. Common side effects may include sedation, dizziness, nausea, and constipation. Due to its controlled status, levorphanol is regulated in many countries, and its use is typically reserved for specific clinical situations.
