3,3-Dimethyl-4-pentenoic acid

Description:
3,3-Dimethyl-4-pentenoic acid, with the CAS number 7796-73-8, is an organic compound characterized by its unsaturated carboxylic acid structure. It features a pentenoic acid backbone with two methyl groups attached to the third carbon, contributing to its branched nature. This compound typically appears as a colorless to pale yellow liquid and has a distinctive odor. It is soluble in organic solvents and exhibits moderate solubility in water due to the presence of the carboxylic acid functional group. The presence of the double bond in the carbon chain makes it reactive, particularly in addition reactions. 3,3-Dimethyl-4-pentenoic acid can be used in various chemical syntheses and may serve as an intermediate in the production of other organic compounds. Its reactivity and structural features make it of interest in both industrial applications and research settings. Safety precautions should be observed when handling this compound, as it may pose health risks if ingested or inhaled.

3,3-Dimethylpent-4-enoic acid (DMPA) is a solid catalyst that is used in the synthesis of chrysanthemic acid. DMPA is prepared by reacting methyl alcohol with chlorine and trimethylchloride in a cavity of an acid catalyst at high temperature. The reaction yield increases with increasing reaction time. DMPA reacts with carbon tetrachloride to produce filtrate and residue. The filtrate contains DMPA, which can be recovered easily by distillation of the solvent. DMPA has been used as an organic solvent for various reactions involving organic compounds.
