It is an inhibitor of the enzyme adenosine deaminase, which converts adenosine to inosine. 2-Cyanoadenosine prevents the conversion of ATP to AMP and may be useful for treating neurological disorders. 2-Cyanoadenosine has been shown to have cardiovascular effects, such as increasing the force of contraction and relaxation in isolated rat hearts.
