Fuming sulfuric acid

Description:
Fuming sulfuric acid, also known as oleum, is a highly concentrated form of sulfuric acid that contains dissolved sulfur trioxide (SO3). It is characterized by its dense, oily consistency and is typically a colorless to yellowish liquid. Fuming sulfuric acid is highly corrosive and can cause severe burns upon contact with skin or mucous membranes. It has a strong, pungent odor and is hygroscopic, meaning it readily absorbs moisture from the air. This substance is primarily used in the production of sulfuric acid, as well as in various chemical processes, including sulfonation reactions. Due to its reactivity, fuming sulfuric acid must be handled with extreme caution, using appropriate personal protective equipment and working in a well-ventilated area or fume hood. Its ability to release sulfur trioxide makes it a potent dehydrating agent, and it can react violently with water, releasing heat and producing a dense, corrosive mist. Proper storage in tightly sealed containers is essential to prevent exposure to moisture and air.
