It is a catalyst for the conversion of terminal alkynes to 1,2-diols or alcohols. BTPF has been shown to react with chloride ions to produce the corresponding phosphine oxide species. This reaction proceeds via a free radical mechanism and can be used as a means of preparing phosphine oxides from chloride salts.
