Psammaplysene A is a potent and specific activator of the G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) for the chemokine CXCL12. It is a ligand that binds to the extracellular domain of the receptor, activating it by inducing conformational changes in the receptor's intracellular domains. Psammaplysene A has been shown to inhibit cell proliferation and induce apoptosis in human cancer cells, as well as inhibit tumor growth in vivo. This compound has also been shown to stimulate bone formation through inhibition of osteoclast activity.
