Ethyl 3-fluoro-5-iodobenzoate is a research chemical used as a transfer catalyst. It has been used to optimize reaction conditions for letermovir, which is an antiviral drug in the class of protease inhibitors. Ethyl 3-fluoro-5-iodobenzoate has also been shown to catalyze the transfer of other molecules, such as bromoacetic acid and chloroacetic acid, from organic solvents into water. The phase transfer catalyst can be reused multiple times without loss of activity. This compound outperformed other phase transfer catalysts for this application and was found to be more selective than many others.
