RuBi-4AP is a precursor of serotonin that is used for the treatment of depression, anxiety, and other mood disorders. It is important in the production of serotonin and melatonin. The compound has been shown to be effective in animal studies for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. Studies on humans have shown that it reduces levels of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT). This drug is also used as an anti-inflammatory agent and may be beneficial in the treatment of Parkinson's disease. RuBi-4AP has been shown to inhibit mitochondrial membrane potential by interfering with the enzyme activities involved in oxidative phosphorylation.
