:Ramipril
Description:
Ramipril is an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor primarily used in the treatment of hypertension and heart failure. It is a prodrug that is converted in the body to its active form, ramiprilat. The chemical formula of ramipril is C23H32N2O5S, and it features a unique structure that includes a sulfonamide group, which is essential for its pharmacological activity. Ramipril works by inhibiting the ACE enzyme, leading to decreased production of angiotensin II, a potent vasoconstrictor, thereby promoting vasodilation and reducing blood pressure. It is typically administered orally and has a relatively long half-life, allowing for once-daily dosing. Common side effects may include cough, elevated potassium levels, and hypotension. Ramipril is also noted for its cardioprotective effects, making it beneficial for patients with a risk of cardiovascular events. As with all medications, it should be used under medical supervision, particularly in patients with renal impairment or those taking other medications that may interact.
