This compound is soluble in water and has a high solubility at low concentrations. 4-(Chloromethyl)benzonitrile also has a high cytotoxicity to cells, with an effect on DNA replication and protein synthesis. The reaction of 4-(chloromethyl)benzonitrile with silver ions forms silver trifluoromethanesulfonate, which can then be precipitated as a solid by addition of hydrochloric acid.
