It has been shown to have a broad spectrum of activity against gram-negative bacteria and is also active against some gram-positive bacteria. 4-(Methoxymethoxy)aniline inhibits the synthesis of bacterial proteins by binding to ribosomes and inhibiting the activity of phosphatases, which are enzymes that catalyze reactions in the cell. This drug can be synthesized from 4-chloroaniline, which is converted into 4-methoxyaniline through a sequence of reactions involving benzyl esters and azide.
