Potassium hydrogen phthalate

Description:
Potassium hydrogen phthalate (KHP), with the CAS number 877-24-7, is a white, crystalline solid that is commonly used as a primary standard in acid-base titrations due to its stability and non-hygroscopic nature. It is the potassium salt of phthalic acid and has the chemical formula KHC8H4O4. KHP is soluble in water, making it suitable for preparing standard solutions, and it has a relatively high melting point. The substance is often utilized in analytical chemistry for calibrating pH meters and determining the concentration of bases. KHP exhibits acidic properties, as it can donate a proton (H+) in solution, which is essential for its role in titrations. Additionally, it is non-toxic and environmentally friendly, making it a preferred choice in laboratory settings. Its molecular structure includes a phthalate group, which contributes to its chemical behavior and interactions. Overall, potassium hydrogen phthalate is a valuable reagent in quantitative analysis and educational laboratories.

    CAS:

Potassium hydrogen phthalate is a corrosion inhibitor and a co-catalyst for the production of polyvinyl chloride. It has been shown to exhibit toxic effects on the central nervous system, liver, and kidneys in animal studies. Potassium hydrogen phthalate is also used as a corrosion inhibitor in wastewater treatment plants. The toxicity of potassium hydrogen phthalate may be due to its ability to inhibit ryanodine receptor, an intracellular calcium release channel that regulates cellular functions such as muscle contraction, enzyme activities, and cell cycle progression. Potassium hydrogen phthalate can also be used to produce polyvinyl chloride. It has been shown to have toxic effects on insects as well as thermodynamic data related to water vapor. Potassium hydrogen phthalate is an analytical reagent that can be used for picolinic acid determination.
