CAS 9000-21-9
:Furcellaran
Description:
Furcellaran, with the CAS number 9000-21-9, is a natural polysaccharide derived from the red algae Furcellaria lumbricalis. It is primarily composed of galactose and sulfate groups, which contribute to its unique properties. Furcellaran is known for its gelling, thickening, and stabilizing abilities, making it valuable in various food and pharmaceutical applications. It forms gels in the presence of potassium ions and exhibits thermoreversible gelation, meaning it can transition between gel and sol states with temperature changes. This characteristic is particularly useful in food processing, where it can enhance texture and mouthfeel. Additionally, furcellaran is biocompatible and biodegradable, making it an attractive option for sustainable applications. Its use extends beyond the food industry to cosmetics and biomedical fields, where it can serve as a drug delivery agent or a component in tissue engineering. Overall, furcellaran is a versatile and functional ingredient with a wide range of applications due to its unique chemical structure and properties.

Furcellaran
CAS:
Furcellaran (Danish agar) is similar to κ-carrageenan but is less sulphated (50%). It has been extracted from Furcellaria lumbricalis, which is mainly harvested off the coast of Denmark. This species, which is common to most parts of Europe, occurs as a loose form and only reproduces vegetatively.
The image was kindly provided by Prof Mike Guiry from Cork who runs ‘The Seaweed Site’.
Color and Shape:Powder
