Poly(acrylic acid) is a polymer that has significant cytotoxicity. The molecular weight of the polymers range from 10,000 to 1,000,000 and it is soluble in water. It has been shown to have a phase transition temperature at around 55°C, which means that it is a liquid at room temperature but becomes a gel when heated. Poly(acrylic acid) is also used as an ionotropic gelation agent in ionotropic electrode gels, and as an additive to increase the viscosity of benzalkonium chloride solutions.
