:Agarose
Description:
Agarose is a linear polysaccharide derived from agar, which is extracted from red algae, particularly species of the genus Gelidium and Gracilaria. It is primarily composed of repeating units of agarobiose, which consists of D-galactose and 3,6-anhydro-L-galactose. Agarose is widely recognized for its gel-forming properties, making it an essential medium in molecular biology, particularly in gel electrophoresis for the separation of nucleic acids and proteins. It is characterized by its ability to form gels at relatively low concentrations, providing a stable matrix that allows for the effective resolution of biomolecules based on size. Agarose gels are typically transparent, non-toxic, and have a high degree of porosity, which can be adjusted by altering the concentration of agarose used. Additionally, agarose is soluble in hot water and forms a gel upon cooling, which is reversible, allowing for easy manipulation in laboratory settings. Its biocompatibility and inert nature make it suitable for various applications, including drug delivery and tissue engineering.

CAS:A sulphated galactan from the red seaweeds (Gelidium spp.). The major gel-forming component agarose consisting of a linear chain of sequences of (1,3) linked β -D-galactopyranosyl units and (1,4 ) linkages to 3,6-anhydro-α-D-galactopyranosyl units. Gelation is via the formation of double helices. Both Gelidium latifolium and Gelidium amansii are sources of both Agar (mixture of agarose and agaropectin) and Agarose.
