Sarcosine oxidase

Description:
Sarcosine oxidase is an enzyme that catalyzes the oxidative demethylation of sarcosine to glycine, producing hydrogen peroxide in the process. It is classified as a flavoprotein, meaning it contains a flavin cofactor, which is essential for its enzymatic activity. This enzyme is primarily found in certain bacteria and is involved in the metabolism of amino acids, particularly in the degradation of sarcosine, a derivative of glycine. Sarcosine oxidase exhibits specificity for its substrate and operates optimally under specific pH and temperature conditions, which can vary depending on the source organism. The enzyme's activity can be influenced by various factors, including the presence of inhibitors or activators, and it plays a role in various physiological processes, including energy metabolism and the regulation of sarcosine levels in biological systems. Due to its involvement in metabolic pathways, sarcosine oxidase has garnered interest in research related to cancer metabolism and neurological disorders.

    CAS:
Sarcosine oxidase (Monomeric sarcosine oxidase, MSOX, EC 1.5.3.1) is an enzyme that catalyzes the oxidative demethylation of sarcosine to yield glycine, H2O2 and formaldehyde in the following reaction:  CH3-NH2+-CH2-COO- + H2O + O2 → NH3+-CH2-COO- + H2O2 + CH2O or sarcosine + water + oxygen → glycine + hydrogen peroxyde + formaldehydeOne unit of Sarcosine oxidase will form 1.0 micromole of formaldehyde from sarcosine per minute at pH 8.3 and 37 °C. You can remove the build-up of hydrogen peroxide using catalase.
