5-Acetoxymethyl-2-furancarboxylic acid is a natural product of the fungi. It has potent anti-fungal activity against a number of endophytic fungi, including those from marine sponges. 5-Acetoxymethyl-2-furancarboxylic acid has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria that are resistant to penicillin, ampicillin, and erythromycin. The bioactive compound also inhibits the growth of leukemia cells and is used as an anti-infective agent in the treatment of infections caused by staphylococcus. The active form binds to bacterial 16S ribosomal RNA and inhibits protein synthesis, leading to cell death by inhibiting the production of proteins vital for cell division.
