:5-Hydroxyeicosapentaenoic acid
Description:
5-Hydroxyeicosapentaenoic acid (HEPE) is a bioactive lipid derived from eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), an omega-3 fatty acid. It is characterized by the presence of a hydroxyl group at the fifth carbon position of the eicosapentaenoic acid chain, which contributes to its unique biological properties. HEPE is known for its role in various physiological processes, including anti-inflammatory responses and modulation of immune function. It is involved in the synthesis of specialized pro-resolving mediators, which are crucial for resolving inflammation and promoting tissue repair. The compound is typically found in marine sources, particularly in fish oils, and is studied for its potential health benefits, including cardiovascular protection and anti-inflammatory effects. Its chemical structure includes a long hydrocarbon chain with multiple double bonds, characteristic of polyunsaturated fatty acids. Research continues to explore its therapeutic applications and mechanisms of action in various health conditions.

CAS:
5(S)-HEPE, an active metabolite of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), is produced via the action of 5-lipoxygenase (5-LO). This compound functions as an agonist for G protein-coupled receptor 119 (GPR119), promoting cAMP accumulation in CHO-K1 cells expressing human GPR119 at 10 µM concentration. Additionally, 5(S)-HEPE enhances glucose-stimulated insulin secretion from MING6 insulinoma pancreatic islets and glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) secretion from HuTu 80 adenocarcinoma cells at the same concentration. Notably, serum levels of 5(S)-HEPE are increased in hyperlipidemia patients.
Formula:C20H30O3Color and Shape:SolidMolecular weight:318.5
