R-1-[(tert-Butoxy)carbonyl]-4-hydroxypyrrolidine-2-carboxylic acid is a potent inhibitor of amine oxidase. It is an amide that reacts with the reaction solution to form a trifluoroacetate ester and a carboxylate salt. The enzyme is inhibited by steric hindrance, hydrogen bonding, and electrostatic interactions. R-(2R,4S)-1-[(tert-Butoxy)carbonyl]-4-hydroxypyrrolidine-2-carboxylic acid has been shown to inhibit the activity of serine proteases, including HIV protease, which is responsible for viral life. This molecule also inhibits cancer cell growth and has shown anti-inflammatory properties against the influenza virus.
