It is used to treat infections of the mouth, throat, skin, and respiratory tract caused by gram-positive bacteria such as Streptococcus pyogenes (group A), Streptococcus pneumoniae (group B), or Staphylococcus aureus. Cefpodoxime proxetil impurity D can be converted into the active form cefpodoxime in the body. The oral absorption of this drug has been found to be rapid and complete in humans with streptococcal pharyngitis.
