CAS 95-21-6
:2-Methylbenzoxazole
Description:
2-Methylbenzoxazole, with the CAS number 95-21-6, is an organic compound that belongs to the class of benzoxazoles, which are heterocyclic aromatic compounds containing both nitrogen and oxygen in their structure. This compound features a fused benzene and oxazole ring system, with a methyl group attached to the benzene ring. It is typically characterized by its pale yellow to white crystalline appearance and has a relatively low solubility in water, while being more soluble in organic solvents. 2-Methylbenzoxazole exhibits interesting chemical properties, including the ability to participate in various chemical reactions such as electrophilic substitution due to the presence of the aromatic ring. It is often used in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and as a fluorescent probe in biochemical applications. Additionally, it may exhibit biological activity, making it of interest in medicinal chemistry. Safety data should be consulted for handling and exposure guidelines, as with any chemical substance.

CAS:
2-Methylbenzoxazole is a nucleophilic compound that reacts with chloride to produce an aromatic hydroxyacetophenone. This reaction is exothermic, and the heat of reaction can be used as a bio-energy source. 2-Methylbenzoxazole has been shown to inhibit human ovarian carcinoma cells in vitro, which may be due to its inhibitory effect on the production of DNA. It also inhibits the growth of bacteria such as S. aureus and E. coli, which are responsible for causing a number of diseases including pneumonia, urinary tract infections, septicemia, or meningitis. The mechanism by which 2-Methylbenzoxazole inhibits bacterial growth is not clear; however, it may be due to inhibition of protein synthesis or cell division by blocking deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) synthesis or inhibiting the activity of DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV enzymes.
Formula:C8H7NOPurity:Min. 97%Color and Shape:Colorless Slightly Yellow Yellow Clear LiquidMolecular weight:133.15 g/mol
